How to choose an espresso tamper
Choosing your coffee equipment
What size tamper do I need?
Match the tamper to the inside of your basket, not the portafilter. Use 51 mm for 51 mm baskets, 53 mm for Breville 54 mm baskets and 58–58.35 mm for 58 mm baskets. A tamper that is too small leaves loose coffee around the edge.
How hard should I tamp espresso?
Firmly enough to compress the bed completely. About 15–20 kg (roughly 30–45 lb) is a common guide, but a level, consistent tamp matters more than the exact force.
Are spring-loaded tampers worth it?
For most home baristas, yes. The spring gives way at a set pressure, so every shot is tamped the same way and you can adjust grind size with one fewer variable.
What is the difference between a tamper and a distributor?
A distributor levels the coffee bed by turning shallow blades across the surface; a tamper compresses it. Distribute or use a WDT tool first, then tamp. Some 2-in-1 tools do both from opposite ends.
Why is my tamp uneven?
Usually the tamper is tilted or too small for the basket. A snug-fitting tamper, or a calibrated one that rests on the basket rim, keeps the puck level so water flows through it evenly.
