Fitting accessories to your Breville machine

The Breville Barista Express (BES870), Barista Pro (BES878) and Barista Touch (BES880), sold as Sage in the UK and much of Europe, use a 54 mm portafilter. That one number sets every accessory size:

Portafilter and dosing cup: 54 mm, matching the group head and basket.
Tamper and distributor: 53–53.3 mm, slightly smaller than the basket so the base clears the walls.
Other Breville models: some use 54 mm and others, such as the Dual Boiler (BES920), use 58 mm. Confirm the size in your manual or measure the basket.

What size portafilter does the Breville Barista Express use?

The Barista Express (BES870), Barista Pro (BES878) and Barista Touch (BES880) use a 54 mm portafilter and basket. Pair them with a 53–53.3 mm tamper and 54 mm dosing cups.

What tamper size fits a Breville 54 mm basket?

A 53 mm or 53.3 mm tamper. It leaves a small gap to the basket wall, so the tamper moves freely while still compressing the edge of the puck.

Do Breville accessories fit Sage machines?

Yes. Sage is the name Breville uses in the UK and much of Europe, so a Sage Barista Express takes the same 54 mm accessories as a Breville Barista Express.

Will the 54 mm bottomless portafilter fit other Breville machines?

It is listed for the BES870, BES878 and BES880. Other 54 mm Breville models may differ, so check the product page or contact support before ordering. The Dual Boiler uses 58 mm and will not fit.

Why use a bottomless portafilter on a Breville?

It shows the underside of the basket while the shot runs, so you can see channeling or uneven flow and adjust grind, dose and tamping. Without spouts, there is also more room for a scale under the cup.
