WDT & Distribution Tools
Break up clumps with a WDT needle tool or level the surface with a rotary distributor before tamping.
Choose a handheld tool or a basket-sized model. Check needle depth and basket fit; use distribution alongside a suitable grind, dose and level tamp.

What does WDT stand for?
WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique, named after John Weiss, who popularized stirring espresso grounds with fine needles. Stirring breaks up clumps and evens out the density of the coffee bed before tamping.
Does WDT really improve espresso?
A WDT needle tool can help break up clumps before tamping. The result still depends on the grinder, dose, basket, distribution and tamp. Keep the recipe consistent and compare flow and taste; a tool alone does not guarantee a more balanced shot.
How do I use a WDT tool?
Grind into the basket or a dosing cup, then stir in small circles from the bottom of the bed to the top for 10–20 seconds, covering the whole basket. Tap gently to settle the grounds, then tamp.
Which needle size works best?
Compare the listed needle diameter, arrangement and adjustable depth for the exact tool, then check how it fits your basket and dose. Needle count alone does not establish better distribution or faster preparation. Follow the tool’s instructions and avoid forcing needles against the basket.
Do I still need a distributor if I use WDT?
Not necessarily. WDT needles stir through the grounds, while a blade distributor mainly levels the surface. You can use WDT and then tamp level without adding a separate leveler. Choose tools around the step your routine needs and confirm the fit.
