Start with your brewing method

Start fine for espresso, around medium for pour over and coarser for French press or immersion cold brew. The chart gives you a first setting to try; the cup tells you where to move next.

Keep track of your own grinder's numbers. A setting from another model does not translate directly, even when both dials use clicks.

Coffee grind size chart

Brew method Starting texture What to watch
Espresso with a non-pressurized basket Fine Shot flow, dose, yield and flavor
Cone pour over Medium-fine to medium Drainage and even wetting
Flat-bottom pour over Medium Bed depth, filter and pouring pattern
Automatic drip Medium Basket shape and batch size
French press Medium-coarse to coarse Steep time and sediment
Immersion cold brew Coarse Strength after filtering and dilution

Use the texture labels to get close. Photos cannot show the full mix of fine and coarse particles in a dose.

How to adjust without losing track

Brew a familiar recipe and taste at a comfortable temperature. Keep the dose and water fixed for the next grind test.

For pour over, try a little finer if the cup tastes thin and sharply sour and the water drains quickly. Try a little coarser if drainage is slow and the finish feels dry or harsh. An uneven pour or a clogged filter can cause similar problems, so watch the brew as well as tasting it.

Move a little, brew again and compare. Leave ratio and temperature unchanged until you know what the adjustment did.

For immersion methods, drainage is not the same diagnostic tool. Keep steep time fixed while comparing two grind settings, then judge the filtered drink at the same serving strength.

For filter coffee, compare the manual steel burr grinder with the USB-C electric steel burr grinder. Choose the one that fits your daily dose and preferred way of grinding; check the stated brewing compatibility for espresso.

Why espresso needs extra care

Espresso needs more than finely ground coffee. You also need small enough adjustments to control flow and an evenly prepared coffee bed.

Before choosing a grinder for a non-pressurized espresso basket, check its adjustment range and intended use. A long list of settings does not tell you how well it handles espresso. Pressurized baskets are often more forgiving of pre-ground coffee.

Make your grinder easier to live with

Remove retained grounds using the manufacturer's recommended method. Our coffee grinder cleaning guide covers routine care; only wash the burr chamber if your manual permits it.

Keep a short list if you switch methods. Record coffee, recipe and setting so returning to pour over after cold brew is easier.

Compare Yozcoffee coffee grinders by brewing compatibility, capacity and adjustment range. A coffee scale helps keep dose consistent while you experiment.

Three burr grinders to shortlist by grinding routine

Each has numbered settings you can record against the chart; choose by dose and whether you want to grind by hand or at the press of a button.

Questions related to this guide

Use these follow-up answers to clarify coffee choices, brewing techniques, and next steps.

Can I use one grind size for everything?
You can try, but one setting is unlikely to suit such different recipes. Use the range intended for the method and adjust from there.
Does finer coffee always taste stronger?
No. Finer grinding changes extraction and flow. Cup strength also depends on the amount of coffee, water and any dilution.
Should I change the setting with a new bag of beans?
Expect to make a small adjustment. A different roast or coffee can behave differently at the same setting.
