An espresso distributor, also called a leveler, sits on the dosed basket. You rotate it to level the top of the coffee bed before tamping. Most distributors have an adjustable working depth, and setting that depth is the step people most often get wrong. This guide covers how to set the depth and how the distributor styles Yozcoffee sells differ.

Distributor vs WDT vs tamper

  • Distributor: a solid base with leaves, wings or vanes that levels the surface. It does not tamp.
  • WDT tool: fine needles that break up clumps through the depth of the bed. See our WDT & Distribution Tools.
  • Tamper: compresses the bed after distribution.

Distributor styles compared

Distributor Base Sizes Notes
Espresso Distributor & Leveler, 3-Leaf 3-leaf rotating base 51 / 53 / 58 mm About 218 g (7.7 oz), adjustable depth
Walnut Espresso Distributor Three-wing 304 stainless steel 51 / 53 / 58 mm Engraved scale for reference
58mm Press-Style Rotating Distributor Four-vane 304 stainless steel 58 mm Press the cap to rotate, spring-loaded
Wheel-Style Espresso Distributor Three-lobe SUS304 51 / 53 / 58 mm 4 cm (1.57 in) tall
2-in-1 Espresso Distributor & Tamper Patterned SUS304 base 51 / 58 mm Rotate to distribute, press to tamp; pressure applied by hand

How to set distributor depth

  1. Dose first. Grind your usual dose into the basket. The right depth depends on the dose and the basket.
  2. Start shallow. Set the base so it only skims the surface, then rest the tool level on the basket rim.
  3. Rotate gently. Turn the tool a few times. If high spots remain, lower the base a little and try again.
  4. Avoid pressing too deep. A distributor is not a tamper. If it is compressing the bed, raise the base.
  5. Note your setting. On the Walnut Distributor, the engraved scale helps you return to a preferred setting. Its numbers are reference marks, not millimeter measurements.
  6. Tamp. Lift the distributor away and tamp with a tamper sized to your basket.

Change the depth again whenever you change dose or basket.

Choosing the right size

The sizes are nominal base diameters. Measure the inside of your basket before you order, because a machine's nominal portafilter size alone does not confirm fit.

FAQ

Do I need both a WDT tool and a distributor?

They do different jobs. WDT breaks up clumps through the bed, and a distributor levels the surface. Some routines use both, WDT first.

Can a distributor replace my tamper?

No, except for the 2-in-1 tool, which levels first and then tamps with pressure you apply by hand.

Which distributor is easiest to repeat?

The press-style 58 mm distributor rotates when you press the top cap, so the motion is the same each time. Any model is repeatable once you note your depth setting.
