A coffee timer scale and a dosing cup scale both read in 0.1 g steps, but they do different jobs. A timer scale sits under your brewer or cup and tracks weight over time. A dosing cup scale weighs beans or grounds in the container you pour from. This guide shows which one fits your routine, using the specifications of the scales Yozcoffee sells.

Quick answer

  • To time and weigh shots or pour-overs: choose one of the 0.1 g/2 kg timer scales in our Coffee Scales collection.
  • To weigh beans and pour them straight into a grinder: choose a dosing cup or bean bowl scale.
  • To weigh beans and then catch the shot in the same cup: choose the Espresso Cup Scale.

Dosing scales compared

Digital Coffee Dosing Cup Scale 0.1 g steps, up to 500 g, g/oz 200 mL (6.8 oz) Tritan cup 90 mm (3.5 in) tall, USB-C
Digital Coffee Bean Scale Bowl 0.3–1000 g, 0.1 g readout Bowl with funnel-shaped spout USB-C, silicone base
Mini Digital Coffee Dosing Cup Scale 0–99.9 g, 0.1 g steps, g/oz Stainless steel inner cup About 68 × 64 mm
Espresso Cup Scale 0.1 g steps, g/mL/oz Removable 100 mL (3.4 oz) 304 steel cup 65 mm (2.6 in) tall, 157 g, USB-C

When a dosing cup scale makes sense

  • Fewer transfers: weigh in the cup, then pour straight into the grinder with less scatter.
  • Single dosing: repeat doses such as 18.0 g for espresso or 15.0 g for pour-over from day to day.
  • Tight coffee bars: the Mini scale (about 68 mm wide) and the Espresso Cup Scale (65 mm tall) take up very little space.

When you still need a timer scale

A dosing cup scale has no brew timer. For pour-over, where you track water weight and time, or for espresso shots timed from the first drip, use a timer scale. Many home baristas use both: a dosing cup for beans and a timer scale for brewing.

Check clearance before buying

If you plan to grind into the cup or set it under an espresso machine, measure the space. The 200 mL dosing cup scale is 90 mm tall and the Espresso Cup Scale is 65 mm tall.

FAQ

Is 0.1 g resolution the same as 0.1 g accuracy?

No. Display resolution shows the step size of the reading. It is not a guarantee of measurement accuracy.

Can I weigh liquids?

The 200 mL Tritan dosing cup scale is listed for beans, grounds and liquids. The Espresso Cup Scale is designed to collect the espresso shot.

Which dosing scale has the largest range?

The Digital Coffee Bean Scale Bowl, at 0.3–1000 g.
