Picture a first shopping cart for a brand-new machine: a 58 mm tamper, a 58 mm puck screen, a second milk jug and a set of pressurized baskets. Not one of those helps. Two won't fit, and the other two are already sitting in the box under the packing foam. That's the trap with Breville Barista Express accessories. The machine ships with more than people realise, and the one size that matters, 54 mm, comes with a catch. So here's what I tell people at the counter: check what you already own, buy the sizes that actually fit, and put your money into the two or three upgrades that change what ends up in the cup.
The short version
- The Barista Express uses a 54 mm portafilter. Tampers and puck screens should be about 53–53.3 mm.
- The box already includes a milk jug, four baskets, the Razor tool and, on current US units, a 54 mm dosing funnel.
- Buy a scale with a timer first. The manual targets 16–19 g in the 2 CUP basket and 25–30 second shots.
- Skip anything 58 mm.
What comes with the Breville Barista Express
Before you buy anything, empty the box properly. The BES870 instruction book lists a stainless steel milk jug, a cleaning disc, dual wall filter baskets in 1 cup and 2 cup, single wall filter baskets in 1 cup and 2 cup, a water filter holder and filter, cleaning tablets, descale powder, the Dosing Funnel 54, an Allen key, a coffee scoop, a cleaning tool, a cleaning brush and the Razor dose trimming tool. The tamper lives on the machine itself: an integrated, removable 54 mm tamper.
So you don't need another milk jug, a funnel or pressurized baskets. The dual wall baskets already are the pressurized kind, and Breville tells you to use them with pre-ground coffee. Once you're grinding fresh beans on the built-in grinder, switch to the single wall baskets and leave the dual wall pair in the drawer. If the difference is fuzzy, our guide to pressurized vs non-pressurized baskets walks through it.
Breville Barista Express accessory sizes
Now the catch I mentioned. The portafilter is 54 mm, and that's the number on every Breville listing. The baskets, though, taper toward the bottom, so anything that has to sit inside them, a tamper or a puck screen, is cut a little smaller to seat flat. Get a true 54 mm tamper and it rides on the walls before it ever reaches the coffee. Here's how the sizes shake out:
| Accessory | Size to buy | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tamper | 53–53.3 mm | Normcore lists 53.3 mm; IMS specifies 53/53.4 mm |
| Puck screen | 53–53.3 mm | Check headspace |
| Dosing funnel | 54 mm | Already in the box on current US units |
| Portafilter | 54 mm Breville fit | Check the model number |
| 58 mm tools | Do not fit | For E61 and commercial machines |
Breville Barista Express upgrades worth buying
With the sizing sorted, here's the order I'd spend money in. It's the same order I'd give a friend: things that let you measure first, then things that make each shot more repeatable, then the extras.
1. A scale with a timer
Breville's own manual gives you targets: about 16–19 g in the 2 CUP basket and a balanced shot running 25–30 seconds. Without a scale you're guessing at half of that. The pressure gauge on the front tells you something, but it can't tell you that today's dose was 17 g and yesterday's was 19. Our 87 mm mini coffee scale with timer reads to 0.1 g, and in espresso mode it tares the cup and starts the clock as soon as coffee reaches it, so your hands stay on the machine. The body is 92 × 87 × 17 mm. Measure your drip tray and the gap under the spouts before you buy any scale, ours included.
2. A WDT tool and a better tamper
Once you can measure, the next job is making every puck the same. The built-in grinder can leave little clumps in the basket. The manual's answer is to tap the portafilter a few times to settle the coffee, which helps, but it won't break those clumps up. A WDT tool will: a few fine needles stirred through the grounds before you tamp.
Then there's the tamp itself. Breville says to press with 22–33 lb (10–15 kg), and adds that the amount of pressure matters less than using the same pressure every time. Socratic Coffee tested 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg tamps and found no meaningful difference in extraction. In other words, consistency is the goal, not strength. That's why I like a spring-loaded tamper for this machine. Our 53 mm 2-in-1 tamper and WDT tool pairs a 30 lb spring tamper with magnetic WDT needles that store inside it, and the listing names the Barista Express along with the Bambino and Bambino Plus. If you're still deciding between needles and a leveler, read WDT vs espresso distributor first.
3. A puck screen
A puck screen is a thin metal disc you lay on top of the tamped coffee. Its most reliable benefit is a cleaner shower screen, because the grounds stay under the disc instead of sticking to the group. Our dual-layer puck screen comes in a 53 mm size and is 0.8 mm thick. That thickness comes out of your headspace, though, so if the screen starts leaving a print in the puck, take a little coffee out of the dose. There's more on that in puck screen size and headspace.
4. A dosing cup
Since current units already come with the funnel, a dosing cup only earns its place if you want to weigh your grounds separately or single dose. You grind into the cup, check the weight, then set the basket over it and flip the two together. Our 54 mm dosing cup for Breville is aluminum, weighs about 170 g, and its listing covers the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Impress and Bambino.
5. A bottomless portafilter
This one is a teaching tool more than a flavor upgrade. With the bottom cut away you can watch the shot form under the basket and see a spray or a thin side the moment it happens. Our 54 mm bottomless portafilter is listed for the BES870, BES878 and BES880. It comes without a basket, so move your single wall basket over. The dual wall ones push everything out through one small hole, so there's nothing to see.
Barista Express accessory comparison
Put side by side with what's already in the box, the list gets short fast:
| Accessory | In the box? | Worth buying? | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scale with timer | No | Yes | High |
| Tamper + WDT | Basic tamper only | Yes | High |
| Puck screen | No | Optional | Medium |
| Dosing cup | Funnel included | Only for single dosing | Low |
| Bottomless portafilter | No | For diagnosis | Low |
| Knock box | No | Yes | Medium |
The knock box is the odd one out. It's not in the box, yet the manual quietly assumes you have one: it tells you to trim the dose with the Razor while holding the portafilter over a knock box. Any sturdy one that fits a 54 mm portafilter will do.
What to skip
Anything labelled 58 mm, first of all, however good the reviews. Those tools are built for E61 and commercial groups. Skip extra milk jugs and pressurized baskets too, since you already own both. And if your machine is the Barista Express Impress, slow down before you click buy: it shares the portafilter, but not every 53.3 mm tool fits it. Normcore, for one, says its 53.3 mm dosing cup isn't compatible with the Impress. Read each listing for your exact model.
A better Barista Express puck-prep workflow
Here's how the pieces fit together on a normal morning. This is the order I'd use on this machine:
- Weigh the beans or grounds.
- Grind into the portafilter with the funnel on.
- Stir the grounds with the WDT tool.
- Tamp level.
- Check the dose with the Razor tool and trim if it's high.
- Lay the puck screen on top if you use one.
- Brew onto the scale and aim for 25–30 seconds.
When the numbers drift, change the grind before anything else. Our espresso grind size guide covers what to move and by how much.

Breville Barista Express accessories FAQ
What size tamper fits the Breville Barista Express?
Breville calls its built-in tamper 54 mm, but that's the nominal size. Because the baskets taper, aftermarket tampers for the Barista Express run about 53 to 53.3 mm. Normcore sells 53.3 mm for this machine, and IMS specifies a 53 or 53.4 mm tamper for its Breville basket.
Does the Breville Barista Express come with a dosing funnel?
The current US instruction book lists the Dosing Funnel 54 among the accessories in the box. Older units may have shipped without one, so open your box and check before you order a funnel.
Do 58mm espresso accessories fit the Barista Express?
No. The Barista Express takes a 54 mm portafilter, so 58 mm tampers, puck screens, funnels and portafilters won't fit. Those are made for E61 and commercial-style groups.
Is a puck screen worth it on a Barista Express?
For most people it's a cleanliness upgrade: grounds stay off the shower screen. It also sits in your headspace, so you may need to drop the dose slightly. Nice to have, not essential.
Do Barista Express accessories fit the Bambino, Pro and Touch?
Many do, since those machines share the 54 mm portafilter. Still read each listing, because some items, certain dosing cups for example, don't fit every model.
What is the first accessory to buy for a Breville Barista Express?
A scale with a timer. The manual gives you dose and shot-time targets, and a scale is the only way to know whether you're hitting them.

Tomorrow, pull one double shot exactly the way you do now and write down three things: the dose, the shot time, and whether the metal cap on the tamper sat level with the basket rim after tamping, which is Breville's own dose check. If you can't fill in the first two, buy the scale. If you can and the numbers jump around from shot to shot, the WDT tool and spring tamper come next.
