An 18 g basket is the simpler choice when your recipe already centers on an 18 g dose and the basket fits your portafiltro correctly. An 18–20 g basket gives you more room to adjust the dose, but it may also be deeper. The number on the basket is a starting range—not proof that it will fit your machine or that every coffee should be dosed at exactly that weight.
Check fit before capacity: a basket must seat securely, clear the bottom of the portafiltro and leave workable headspace below the shower screen. A shared “58 mm” label does not make baskets interchangeable.

What the basket rating actually tells you
A rated dose describes the amount of ground coffee the basket is designed around. It does not describe the weight of the metal, the finished espresso yield or the exact dose that every roast will occupy comfortably. Darker coffee is often less dense than lighter coffee, so equal weights can fill the basket to different heights. Grind setting and distribution also change the final puck level.
Treat 18 g or 18–20 g as a useful neighborhood. Start inside the listed range, prepare the puck normally and check the space above it. Do not force a larger dose into a basket merely because the coffee fits before tamping.

Measure three things before buying
1. The current basket, not just the group-head label
Remove the cool, empty basket and measure its outer rim, inner opening and height with calipers. Record whether it has a retaining ridge and whether its walls are straight or tapered. Compare those measurements with the replacement listing. If the manufacturer provides a machine-specific fit list, use that before a nominal size.
Il 58 mm crystalline titanium 18 g basket, for example, lists a 70 mm outer rim, 60 mm inner opening and 24.5 mm height. It is ridgeless, so the portafiltro spring must hold it securely. It is not a universal replacement for every product sold as 58 mm.
2. The available depth
A deeper basket can contact the floor of a closed or spouted portafiltro even when the rim seats correctly. The 58 mm tapered 18–20 g basket is 38 mm tall and narrows to a 34 mm perforated base. That 34 mm figure describes the base—not the tamper size. Check depth and bottom clearance before ordering.

3. The top clearance with your normal puck
Dose, distribute and tamp as usual, then inspect for contact with the shower screen according to the machine maker’s instructions. A deep screw or screen can reduce usable space. A dry imprint on top of the puck before brewing suggests the dose or added accessory needs attention. There is no universal headspace number that applies to every group and basket.
If you use a puck screen, include its thickness in the check. Follow the puck screen diameter and headspace checklist rather than assuming a screen will fit because its nominal diameter matches.

These baskets are sold individually. A portafiltro, tamper, puck screen and coffee are not included unless the product page explicitly says otherwise. Titanium, hole count or a tapered shape cannot compensate for an incompatible fit or inconsistent preparation.
A two-shot method for changing basket size
- Keep the coffee constant. Use the same beans and let the espresso machine reach its normal operating condition.
- Start near the rated dose. Use 18 g in an 18 g basket; begin within 18–20 g in the larger basket.
- Weigh the dose and beverage. A 0.1 g mini espresso scale can record both without relying on scoop volume.

- Record shot one. Note dose, beverage weight, time, visible flow and taste.
- Change only the grind for shot two. If the new basket runs faster or slower, adjust one small step and repeat. Do not change grind, dose and yield together.

When not to change baskets
- Your current 18 g recipe tastes balanced and fits with comfortable clearance.
- You cannot verify the replacement basket’s rim, height or retention.
- The portafiltro is too shallow for the deeper basket.
- You are trying to fix an unstable grinder setting or poor distribution. Solve the preparation problem first.
- You expect a different material or hole pattern to guarantee better espresso. It cannot.
Choose the basket that supports the dose you actually want to brew and fits the hardware you already own. For most home routines centered on 18 g, an accurately fitted 18 g basket is enough. Move to an 18–20 g option when the extra dose range is useful and you have confirmed the added depth and headspace.
