For a first cold-drip batch, try a 1:12 ratio by weight: 30 g of coffee with 360 g of total brewing water. Use 40 g and 480 g only if both fit the brewer's stated limits.

Taste the finished coffee before deciding whether to dilute it. Beans, grind, drip rate and filtration all affect the result. Keep the first recipe consistent, then adjust one variable at a time.

What does a 1:12 cold drip ratio mean?

The arithmetic is one line:

coffee weight × ratio number = water weight

At 1:12, 35 g of coffee needs 420 g of water, because 35 × 12 = 420. For kitchen measurements, water is close to 1 g per milliliter. Weighing avoids the difficulty of reading volume markings through curved glass. A scale that reads to 0.1 g helps you measure coffee and water consistently.

At the same water amount, a smaller ratio number means more coffee. For example, 360 g of water uses 30 g at 1:12 and about 32.7 g at 1:11.

Count ice and liquid water together

Ice is water. If your brewer takes both, their combined weight is the recipe's water. For a 360 g total, load 180 g of ice and 180 g of cold water, or whatever split the brewer is designed around. Pour 360 g of water and then pile 150 g of ice on top and the total becomes 510 g. With 30 g of coffee, that changes the ratio from 1:12 to 1:17.

Keep the ice size and ice-to-water split similar while comparing ratios. Melt rate and room conditions can affect flow and timing.

A simple 1:12 cold drip recipe

  • 40g freshly ground coffee
  • 480g total ice and cold water
  • Filter paper if required by the brewer

Method

  1. Grind medium to medium-coarse. Even particles matter more than matching a grinder number you read somewhere.
  2. Fit the lower filter and add 40 g of coffee to the basket.
  3. Level the bed with a tap or two. Do not tamp it. Add the top paper if your brewer uses one to spread the drops.
  4. Weigh out 480 g of ice and water together, staying under the upper chamber's marked limit.
  5. Open the valve to a slow, steady drip. On the 400 ml manual ice drip maker, that is around 7–8 drops every 10 seconds.
  6. Recheck the rate at five minutes, and again once the water level has dropped by half — less head pressure means a slower drip.

Why finished coffee weighs less than starting water

Expect less finished coffee than water loaded. Some liquid remains in the grounds and brewer, and any unmelted ice has not passed through the bed. Weigh the result instead of assuming a fixed loss.

This matters as soon as you brew for more than yourself. Weigh the yield once from a batch you liked — a scale with a timer under the carafe does it without extra effort — and plan servings from that number afterward. The ratio describes what goes in, not what comes out.

How to adjust the ratio by taste

If the coffee is bitter, harsh, or drying

If the coffee tastes sour or hollow
