Medium-coarse is a useful place to start for cold drip. From there, use the flow and taste to decide whether your particular coffee and filter need a small adjustment.

Why cold drip usually starts medium-coarse

Cold drip sends water through the bed, so grind affects both extraction and flow. Very fine particles can restrict drainage; coarse grounds may need a different recipe to extract well.

Medium-coarse is where those two failures are furthest apart. The 400 ml manual ice drip coffee maker currently recommends medium-coarse as its starting point, and the 600 ml model's guide starts around medium. Those are not contradictory — they are the two ends of a narrow window, and the right answer inside it depends on your grinder, the roast, and how deep the bed sits in your basket.

Consistency counts as much as average size. A dose containing both boulders and dust gives you the worst of each: water slips past the big pieces while the fines pack the mesh, so the same brew is under-extracted and over-extracted at once. That is what a blade grinder produces by design, and it is why a burr grinder with a wide adjustment range makes more difference to cold drip than the brewer does. Even a hand grinder with 40 stepped settings gives you the ability to move one click and taste the result, which is the whole dial-in process.

What happens when the grind is too fine?

Watch for a change in drainage after brewing begins. Standing water can prompt you to check fines, filter condition and bed preparation.

A drying or muddy cup can have several causes. Use taste with the flow observations rather than diagnosing grind from flavor alone.

  • Water sits on top of the bed instead of moving through it.
  • The drip below the coffee basket slows while the upper valve stays where you set it.
  • Fine sediment settles in the bottom of the carafe.
  • The used bed is dense and paste-like, and needs a brush rather than a rinse to clear off the filter.

Go one step coarser, clear the filter and valve properly, and repeat the same dose and water amount. A restricted filter can mask the effect of a grind adjustment.

What happens when the grind is too coarse?

If a coarse setting gives a thin cup, check the valve and dose before moving finer. A quick finish or dark color alone does not establish extraction quality.

Check the valve against your recorded starting rate before changing the grind. If both have changed, restore one variable first so you can make a useful comparison.

How to dial in grind size in three brews

Keep the coffee, dose, water, ice split, filter setup and target drip rate identical across all three. Three brews over a weekend is enough for most setups.

Brew 1: establish the baseline

Grind medium-coarse. Level the bed without tamping and open the valve to the rate your model recommends — around 7–8 drops every 10 seconds on the Yozcoffee 400 ml guide. Write down five things: total water, dose, starting rate, whether the rate drifted, and how it tasted. The flow note helps explain why batches at the same grind setting may finish differently.

Brew 2: make one grind change

If the first batch flowed freely but tasted weak, try a little finer. If it pooled or stalled, check the filter and bed preparation before trying coarser. Keep the remaining recipe steady.

Brew 3: confirm instead of chasing

Repeat a setting that improved the cup before making another change. This helps confirm that the difference came from the grind rather than another part of the brew.

Prepare the coffee bed without creating resistance

Level the grounds gently without tamping, following the brewer's instructions. If a distribution paper is specified, place it flat as directed. Check that water reaches the bed evenly.

Pre-wetting depends on what the brewer is designed for. Where it is used, add the water evenly across the whole surface and count it in the recipe total. You want everything uniformly damp, not a slurry. Assemble the brewer with the basket sitting level; a basket seated crooked by 2 mm sends all the water to one side.

Account for roast and coffee freshness

Different beans can produce different results at the same setting. Start near the range that worked before and compare flow and taste rather than predicting an exact adjustment from roast level.

Do not build a rule for every bag before tasting one. Start medium-coarse, watch what happens, adjust in small steps. Do clear the grinder between coffees, though — the amount of retained grounds varies by grinder, and a quick clean-out helps keep old grounds out of the next dose. Match grind to the brewer

The compact 400 ml brewer runs a roughly 300-mesh reusable stainless filter and a narrow coffee path, so it feels resistance sooner. The same grinder click will not produce the same flow in both, because basket geometry, bed depth and filter arrangement all change what the water meets.

Recheck the recipe when changing brewers or dose. Basket shape and bed depth can affect flow even with the same grind.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold drip grind the same as immersion cold brew grind?

They can be close, but use each brewer's recommended range. Cold drip and immersion have different flow and filtration needs, so there is no fixed number of clicks between them.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

Yes, if the grind suits the brewer and filter. You will not be able to adjust particle size, so use the manufacturer's recipe and watch for restricted flow.

Does a finer grind make cold drip stronger?

Up to a point. Finer increases extraction and resistance together, and past a certain click the resistance wins: the bed chokes, water channels, and the cup gets weaker and harsher at the same time. Strength is more reliably controlled through the coffee-to-water ratio and how much you dilute at the glass.

Why does my drip stop halfway through?

Possible causes include filter residue, fines, bed preparation and a change in the upper water level. Inspect the setup before choosing an adjustment.

Should the used bed look muddy?

Look for areas that stayed dry or appear to have received little water. Surface appearance is one clue; compare it with the flow and taste.
