Plan several hours for cold drip, then learn the timing of your own brewer. Water amount, flow, coffee bed and melting ice can all change the finish.

Record the first few batches before scheduling around an exact duration. Use the same recipe so the times are comparable.

Why cold drip time cannot be one fixed number

Water travels from the upper chamber through the coffee and filter into the carafe. Restrictions anywhere along that path can alter the flow during brewing.

Equal drops per minute do not necessarily mean equal water flow on different brewers, because drop size varies. Counting drops is most useful for repeating a setting on your own equipment.

The 400 ml manual ice drip maker opens at roughly 7–8 drops every 10 seconds, or 42–48 a minute. That is a starting reference, not enough information to calculate the finish time. Drop volume is unknown and the rate can change during brewing.

1. Total water

Count brewing ice as part of the total water. For example, 300 g of ice plus 180 g of liquid gives 480 g of planned brew water. Different volumes can change finish time even at the same valve setting.

2. Valve setting

Make small valve adjustments and give the brewer time to respond. Early output can lag while dry grounds take up water.

3. Grind size and fines

Fine particles migrate down and pack against the filter, which is why a brew can hold its planned rate at the top while the bottom outlet slows to a stop. Medium to medium-coarse is the working range for these towers — French press territory, perhaps one step finer. A grinder that throws off a lot of dust makes this worse, so a burr grinder with a wide adjustment range earns its place here, and it is worth checking how coarse cold drip actually wants to be before you blame the valve.

4. Coffee dose and bed depth

Changing the dose also changes the bed depth. Recheck flow when you increase or decrease it.

5. Ice shape and room temperature

Ice must melt before passing through the coffee. Keep cube size and the ice-to-water split similar while comparing batches.

6. Falling water pressure

Flow may slow as the upper chamber empties. Recheck during the batch and note how your brewer behaves.

A practical way to estimate your finish time

Use measured output to understand timing:

  1. Weigh the ice and water together before loading.
  2. Set the target drip and start a timer.
  3. At 30 minutes, weigh what has collected in the carafe.
  4. Divide your expected yield by that hourly rate for a first estimate.
  5. Check again near the halfway point, because flow shifts as the chamber empties and the bed saturates.

How to tell whether the brew is progressing normally

A healthy run looks like this:

  • Separated drops, not a continuous thread of water.
  • A bed that darkens evenly instead of growing one deep crater.
  • Liquid leaving the bottom of the basket, not only entering the top.
  • Steady accumulation in the carafe.
  • No standing water sitting above the filter.

The upper drip and lower output need not match immediately. Watch the trend as the bed wets rather than reacting to a single drop.

Why a brew finishes too quickly

For an unexpectedly quick batch, check the valve, dose and whether the bed wetted evenly. Finish time alone cannot identify channeling.

If the cup tastes good, record the shorter time. If it is weak, change one relevant variable in the next batch and compare.

Why a brew takes far longer than expected

Inspect standing water, filter residue and bed compression. Confirm the valve setting and follow the cleaning instructions before changing the recipe.

How to schedule cold drip coffee

Start when you can check the early flow and revisit it as the instructions require. Use a stable surface away from the counter edge.

The 400 ml tower is the easier one to learn on because the whole path stays visible. The 600 ml glass tower handles a bigger batch, though more water at the same flow simply means more hours. Either way, decant into a sealed bottle and refrigerate as soon as it finishes — cold drip left standing in an open carafe at room temperature goes flat and sour inside a day. Can cold drip coffee finish in two hours?

Yes, with a small batch or an open valve. Speed alone does not tell you the extraction went well. Taste it, and check whether the bed was used evenly or hollowed out in one spot.

Can cold drip take overnight?

An unusually long batch deserves a check for restricted flow. Follow the brewer's operating-time guidance rather than assuming a longer extraction is appropriate.

Should I adjust the valve during brewing?

Small corrections are fine when the rate drifts, and worth recording. If frequent large adjustments are needed, check the grind, bed preparation, filter and valve condition.

Does slower always taste better?

No. Slower is not automatically better, and a blockage can create uneven extraction. Use a manageable flow that produces the flavor you want.

When should I stop the brew?

End the brew at the point specified by your recipe and brewer instructions, such as the planned water passing through or a target yield. Record that endpoint so you can repeat it.
