At a Glance

Tamp the same way every time without having to judge how hard you are pressing. This spring-loaded impact tamper has a factory-set tamping force: press down until you hear the click, and the internal hammer finishes the tamp. The wide flange rests on the basket rim, so the base stays level.

  • Preset constant force: no calibration or adjusting needed.
  • Audible click: tells you when the preset force has been reached.
  • Rim-resting flange: keeps the base parallel to the basket to help prevent uneven, tilted pucks.
  • 304 stainless steel base: 51, 53 or 58.5 mm, flat or threaded.

Each order includes one tamper in the handle finish, base size and base style you select.

How the Impact Mechanism Works

Inside the tamper, three sets of springs work together:

  1. Pressure spring: builds up force in the handle as you press down.
  2. Impact hammer: releases once the preset force is reached, giving a firm final tap and an audible click.
  3. Return springs: reset the hammer and the leveling flange after you lift, so you are ready for the next shot.

Unlike a standard tamper, you do not have to guess how hard to press. The click marks the same end point on every shot, which removes one variable when you are dialing in.

Which Size Do I Need?

Choose the base size for your basket, not just the portafilter size listed for your machine. These pairings are common starting points:

  • 51 mm: 51 mm portafilters, such as many De'Longhi pump espresso machines (e.g. Dedica series).
  • 53 mm: 54 mm portafilters, such as Breville / Sage Barista Express, Barista Pro and Bambino. The 53 mm base leaves a small clearance inside the 54 mm basket.
  • 58.5 mm: 58 mm commercial-style portafilters, such as E61-group machines, Rancilio Silvia and Gaggia Classic. It works best with straight-walled precision baskets; some stock baskets taper toward the bottom.

Not sure? Measure the inside diameter of your basket at the height the coffee bed sits, or see our espresso tamper size guide.

Flat or Threaded Base

Flat: a smooth, classic contact face that leaves a clean, even puck surface.

Threaded: fine concentric rings on the contact face that add surface texture to the top of the puck. Some baristas simply prefer the textured finish.

Both styles are solid 304 stainless steel with a brushed finish. The option you select is the one you receive; the base is not interchangeable in the box.

How to Use

  1. Dose and distribute. Add your coffee to the basket and break up clumps. A 7-needle WDT tool helps here.
  2. Seat the tamper. Place the base in the basket so the flange rests evenly on the rim.
  3. Press until it clicks. Push the handle straight down. Stop when you hear and feel the click; there is no need to press harder.
  4. Lift and brew. Release the handle, lift the tamper straight out and lock in the portafilter.

A silicone tamping mat keeps the portafilter steady and protects your counter while you tamp.

In the Box

  • 1 × Assembled impact espresso tamper in your selected handle finish, base size and base style, in a retail box

Portafilters, mats and other items shown in photos are not included.

Cleaning & Care

Brush off grounds and wipe the base dry after each use. The tamper unscrews into its parts for a deeper clean when needed; dry every part fully before reassembling. Hand wash only: do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not soak the walnut handle.

Small machining marks on the metal are a normal result of manufacturing and do not affect performance.

FAQ

Can I adjust the tamping force?

No. The force is set at the factory so every tamp ends at the same point. If you want to fine-tune pressure, a standard tamper is the better choice; if you want repeatable tamps without thinking about pressure, this is the one.

Is the click supposed to be loud?

Yes. The distinct click is the impact hammer releasing, and it tells you the tamp is complete. You can stop pressing as soon as you hear it.

Which size should I choose?

Match your basket: 51 mm for most 51 mm portafilters, 53 mm for Breville / Sage 54 mm portafilters, and 58.5 mm for 58 mm commercial-style portafilters. A 58.5 mm base may not fit every basket labeled 58 mm, especially tapered stock baskets, so check your basket before ordering.

Flat or threaded: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Flat is the classic choice and easy to wipe clean. Threaded adds fine rings to the puck surface, which some baristas prefer. Both use the same 304 stainless steel and the same impact mechanism.

Is the 67 mm size the tamping diameter?

No. 67 mm is the outer flange that rests on the basket rim. The part that touches the coffee is the 51, 53 or 58.5 mm base you select.

Do both handle finishes work the same way?

Yes. The mechanism, flange and base are identical. Only the handle changes: matte black aluminum alloy or natural black walnut.
