Check the part first

What can be washed with water?

A removable part is not automatically washable. Check the manual for the part itself, including its seals, coating and electrical connections.

Quick reference: check your model’s manual before washing or removing parts
Part First approach Check before doing more
Grinder burrs & chamber Dry-brush accessible residue with power disconnected. Whether the burrs can be removed or washed; do not assume either.
Removable carafe, filter & grounds cup Hand-wash only if approved, rinse and dry fully. Material, coating, seals and dishwasher instructions.
Electric kettle Wipe the exterior; use its approved internal cleaning procedure. Descaler compatibility, dilution and rinsing steps. Never immerse.
Motor, powered base & charging port Keep dry. Follow the manufacturer’s exterior-cleaning instructions. Do not rinse, soak or put in a dishwasher.

A few essentials

Before you start

01 / POWER OFF

Unplug & cool

Disconnect electrical equipment and allow hot parts to cool. Keep motors, charging ports, plugs and powered bases dry.

02 / CHECK FIRST

Read the manual

Only remove parts intended for user cleaning. Dishwasher suitability, soaking and cleaning agents depend on the exact product.

03 / KEEP IT GENTLE

Use a soft touch

Use a soft brush or cloth. Avoid abrasive pads on finished surfaces, and dry washable parts fully before reassembly.

Coffee grinders

How to clean a coffee grinder

Old grounds and coffee oils can collect around the burrs and exit chute.

Dry brushPower disconnectedFollow the manual
  1. Switch off and unplug the grinder. Empty loose beans and grounds.
  2. Remove only the parts your manual allows. Brush loose grounds from accessible burrs and the chute.
  3. Wash a removable hopper or grounds container only if the manual permits it. Dry completely.
  4. Reassemble carefully and check the grind setting before the next use.

Do not rinse the motor housing or assume burrs can be washed. Use grinder-cleaning tablets only when approved for your model. Stop if a part resists removal. Grinder care reference.

Brewers, carafes & filters

How to clean brewers and reusable filters

Pay attention to the places coffee sits: the filter, the carafe, the lid and any removable seal.

Empty after useRinse washable partsAir-dry separately
  1. Let hot equipment cool. Empty used grounds and remove disposable paper filters.
  2. For parts approved for washing, use warm water and mild dish soap. Use a soft brush on reusable mesh without bending it.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Clean removable lids and seals as the manual directs; do not force fixed valves apart.
  4. Leave washable parts separate to air-dry before closing the brewer or packing it away.

Avoid sudden temperature changes with glass. Automatic brewers can contain electronics even when they look like a manual dripper; do not immerse the assembled device.

Care tips by brewer

French press

Put grounds in the trash or an accepted food-waste bin. Clean the plunger mesh and rim. Separate filter layers only as directed, then dry before reassembling.

Cold brew & cold drip

Clean after every batch. Check the filter, lid, pouring lip and accessible seals. Follow the manual for valves and taps.

Pour-over & travel sets

Discard the paper filter and clean washable parts. Dry fully before packing. Keep powered sections and charging ports dry.

Kettles

How to clean and descale a kettle

Descaling removes mineral buildup from water. Follow your kettle’s instructions for the cleaner, dilution and rinse cycles.

Soft clothNo immersionModel-approved descaler
  1. Unplug the kettle and let it cool completely.
  2. Wipe the exterior gently. Keep the electrical connector, controls and base dry; never submerge an electric kettle.
  3. If mineral deposits appear, follow your kettle’s descaling instructions and the cleaner’s dilution and contact-time directions.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and complete any fresh-water cycles required by the manual before brewing.

Do not scrub deposits with steel wool. A recipe for another kettle may not suit your model’s materials or coating. Kettle care reference.

Espresso equipment

How to clean espresso equipment

Portafilters, baskets and milk-contact parts need their own routine. Automatic cleaning cycles depend on the machine.

  1. After brewing, let parts cool and release pressure as the manual directs before removing the portafilter or opening a portable espresso maker.
  2. Discard the puck. Clean the removable basket and other washable coffee-contact parts according to the manual, then rinse and dry.
  3. If your machine has a steam wand, follow its after-use wipe and purge procedure. Keep hands clear of steam and hot surfaces, and use a separate clean cloth for milk residue.
  4. Empty and clean a removable drip tray as needed. Run cleaning or descaling cycles only as specified for your model.

Backflush only if your machine explicitly supports it. Do not assume a portable espresso maker, capsule machine or pump machine uses the same procedure or cleaner.

A routine you can keep

Your cleaning schedule

When What to check
After each use Empty used grounds. Clean washable coffee-contact parts and leave them to dry.
Weekly check Look for trapped grounds, oily residue and blocked mesh. Clean accessible areas as your manual allows; frequent use may call for earlier attention.
When scale appears Use the kettle’s approved descaling procedure. Water hardness and usage affect how often this is needed.
Before storing Empty, clean and dry. Store loose parts without trapping moisture; follow the manual for battery storage.

Good questions

Common questions

Can I put my coffee equipment in the dishwasher?

Only if the instructions mark that specific part dishwasher-safe. Glass or stainless steel alone is not enough; coatings, seals and electronics matter too.

Can I use vinegar on every coffee tool?

No. Check the model’s instructions before using vinegar, citric acid or a commercial cleaner. Suitable chemicals and concentrations vary by material and equipment.

Can I clean a burr grinder with rice?

Do not use rice as a substitute for a brush or approved grinder cleaner. Only use cleaning tablets if your grinder’s manufacturer permits them. Read the manufacturer’s explanation.

Is cleaning the same as descaling?

No. Cleaning removes coffee oils and residue; descaling addresses mineral deposits from water. Use the process intended for the problem and equipment. Descaler is not a universal cleaner for grinders, filters or coatings.

How often should I deep-clean a grinder?

Follow your model’s schedule. With daily use, check accessible areas weekly and clean sooner if residue builds up. Only remove parts intended for user cleaning.

My grinder or brewer still seems blocked. What next?

Stop using it and check the troubleshooting section of the manual. Do not force internal parts or open the electrical housing. Send our support team the product name and a photo of the issue.

When cleaning does not solve it

Still blocked or not working?

Slow flow or trapped grounds

Inspect accessible mesh or the grinder chute as directed by the manual. Do not force a valve, run a jammed grinder repeatedly, or assume stronger chemicals will help.

Damage or an electrical issue

Stop using equipment with cracked glass, damaged cables, a burning smell or water inside powered parts. Let support identify the next step; cleaning is not a repair.

Not sure which part can be washed?

Send us your product name and a clear photo. We can help you identify the right care instructions.
