Position the portafilter on the soft mat surface, distribute the grounds and tamp with controlled downward pressure. The silicone cushions the contact area and helps protect the counter below.
As a corner mat it is meant to sit at the edge of the counter, so the portafilter basket rests flat on the pad with the handle clear of the worktop - a steadier, more level tamp than balancing the portafilter on a bare counter.
