Cold brew, cold drip or iced coffee?

Cold coffee describes the drink. Cold brew and cold drip describe how it is extracted; iced coffee can also be brewed hot and served over ice.

Choose by usable capacity, not just bottle size

The capacity in a product name describes the vessel; finished coffee yield depends on the fill line, filter, grounds and water retained by the coffee. Pick a size around how much you drink, then check the selected variant, dimensions and included parts on the product page.

A simple immersion routine

  1. Start with a clean bottle or pitcher and a coarse, even grind suited to its filter.
  2. Weigh the coffee and water. Follow the brewer's recipe and fill line, then steep covered in the fridge.
  3. Remove the grounds when brewing is complete. Taste before adding ice, water or milk and adjust one variable next time.
  4. Wash the removable filter, lid and seals according to the product instructions. Let the parts dry separately.

Cold coffee equipment: common questions

What is the difference between cold brew and cold drip?

Immersion cold brew steeps grounds in water before filtering. Cold drip passes water gradually through a coffee bed into a separate vessel. Choose a bottle or pitcher for immersion, or a drip brewer when you want to adjust water flow.

Should I choose a cold brew bottle or a pitcher?

Choose a bottle for a smaller batch and a narrow footprint. Choose a pitcher for a larger batch or easier serving at home. Check the actual dimensions, usable fill line and filter capacity rather than assuming the stated vessel size equals finished coffee yield.

What grind should I use for cold brew?

Start with a coarse, even grind for an immersion bottle or pitcher, then follow the instructions for its filter. Cold drip may need a different grind to maintain water flow. Adjust in small steps and keep the coffee dose and water amount consistent while testing.

Do these brewers need paper filters?

Filter requirements vary by brewer. Bottles and pitchers in this collection include models with reusable infusers; cold drip brewers can use a different filter arrangement. Check the included-parts list and replacement-filter requirements for the exact product you choose.

Can I put every cold coffee brewer in the dishwasher?

Do not assume that glass, plastic, seals and valves share the same care instructions. Check the product page before using a dishwasher or hot water. Remove coffee grounds after brewing and clean the filter and lid so residue does not carry into the next batch.

Do I need a grinder and scale to get started?

You can use coffee that is already ground for your brewer. A suitable burr grinder lets you adjust the grind, and a scale helps repeat the coffee-to-water ratio. Start with the brewer you need and add tools around your routine.
