Using your bottomless portafilter
- Check that the basket is seated securely and the portafilter locks into your machine without forcing it.
- Use freshly ground espresso coffee and a dose suited to your basket, leaving enough headspace.
- Distribute the grounds evenly, tamp level and clear loose grounds from the rim.
- Place a cup beneath the basket and brew. Compare the flow, shot time and taste before changing one variable for the next shot.
What to try when a shot runs unevenly
- Sprays or thin jets: check for clumps, gaps or an uneven tamp. Improve distribution before changing the grind.
- Fast flow and a thin-tasting shot: try a slightly finer grind while keeping the dose consistent.
- Very slow flow: try a slightly coarser grind and check that the basket is not overfilled.
Flow is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis. Judge the result by taste as well as appearance.
Care for the steel and wood
After brewing, allow the metal to cool before handling. Remove spent grounds, rinse the coffee-contact metal parts and dry thoroughly. Wipe the wood handle with a damp cloth, then dry it. Do not soak the handle or put the assembled portafilter in a dishwasher.
Frequently asked questions
Will it fit every 54mm espresso machine?
No. Diameter alone does not establish compatibility. Check the listed Breville model numbers above; ask us before ordering for any other machine.
Which basket is best for watching extraction?
A compatible single-wall, non-pressurized basket lets you observe flow across its underside. A pressurized basket concentrates the exit flow and does not provide the same view of extraction. Check basket depth and seating as well as nominal diameter.
Why does espresso spray from the bottom?
Spraying can indicate channeling through the coffee puck. Check distribution, tamping and grind size. If water leaks around the group-head seal instead, stop brewing and check the portafilter fit and gasket.
Will it make my espresso taste better?
It can help you identify changes to try, but flavor still depends on your coffee, grind, recipe and preparation. Use the view to guide adjustments, then taste the result.
